The Environment

Despite mechanisation, growing Christmas trees has a very low impact on the environment compared with the manufacture and distribution of artificial trees It has long been known that tree plantations absorb carbon emissions, and that an acre of trees can provide enough oxygen daily for at least 18 people, as well as reducing humidity and improving air quality. Commercial tree crops therefore have a positive contribution to the environment while they are growing (for about 10 years), and each tree harvested is replaced with at least one planted the following spring.

Since 2010 Tayside Forestry has taken a number of steps to further reduce its carbon footprint. With the installation of a 15KW wind turbine we have been able to produce most of the electricity required to run the farm.

Although we will always need to use 4x4 vehicles for off-road work and towing, we are now using more eco-friendly vehicles such as the Vauxhall Corsa ECO for as many road miles as possible.
