Firewood for Fire Walking!
Posted: 2nd June 2017
We had an interesting firewood order recently. Could we supply birch or pine logs for a fire walk? The customer was specifically looking for birch or pine logs. Seemingly there are only certain species of wood that are suitable for fire walking. Fortunately we had birch in stock from the birch woods around Bridge of Cally. We cut the wood into bigger logs than our usual 25cm, then got them onto our drying floor to reduce the moisture content down to below 20%. They obviously had to be perfect for burning on the night with so many feet at risk!
Fire walking has been practiced by many people and cultures in all parts of the world, with the earliest known reference dating back to Iron Age India – c. 1200 BC. Who knew though that it was also taking place in Kirkcaldy!
After much googling we discovered that modern physics has explained the phenomenon of fire walking. Seemingly the amount of time the foot is in contact with the ground is not enough to induce a burn. Also firewood although it gives of a great heat from your fire or log burner, is not a good conductor of heat.
By all accounts the event was a great success and the wood we supplied I am told was ‘perfect’ – phew!
The organiser Anne Hardie of ACE Motivation Ltd is planning another event for September so if you are interested, you can book your place by calling 07519 764770. We promise we will put lots of care and attention into preparing the birch for this event too.
