How to keep your tree looking great throughout the season

  • Choosing Your Tree

We want you to enjoy your Christmas tree throughout the festive season. Follow our simple tips on how to look after it and be happy knowing you can have a magical Christmas with a beautiful fresh tree. Tayside Forestry are members of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association

  • Caring for Cut Trees

When you get your tree home, keep it outside, preferably standing in water, until you are ready to put it up.

Before bringing the tree indoors it is essential if about half an inch is cut off the butt. When trees are cut pitch oozes out and seals the pores. By sawing off the base, you will open up the pores, and the tree will be able to absorb water.

Place your tree in a container of water that is replenished on a regular basis. You can buy special tree stands which provide watering space and can be used year after year. Or, you can go for the tried and tested method of using a bucket filled with small rocks. Keep the container topped up with water every day. Trees can drink up to 10 litres over the first couple of days.

Keep the tree away from radiators or other heat sources.

  • Care of Pot Grown Trees

These are trees that have been grown from seedlings inside a specially designed pot to give it the best chance of growing on in your garden after Christmas.

Keep your tree well-watered, you will be surprised how much it needs.

Keep the tree away from radiators or other heat sources.

After Christmas dig a hole slightly bigger than the pot

If you wish to dig the tree up and bring it in next Christmas, leave it in the pot, the small holes allow the roots out, or carefully remove for a permanent plant.

Backfill the hole with soil and water generously
